Getafe head coach Jose Bordalas opens up on the club's deadline-day acquisition of Manchester United's Mason Greenwood.

Getafe head coach Jose Bordalas has opened up on the club's deadline-day acquisition of Mason Greenwood.

The 21-year-old completed a loan move from Manchester United on September 1, with Getafe giving him the chance to rebuild his career in Spain's top flight.

Last month, the Red Devils announced that Greenwood's time at Old Trafford was over, but he still has another two years left to run on his contract, and the forward's deal was not terminated.

Last January, Greenwood was arrested on suspicion of rape and assault following accusations from a woman, and he was then further arrested on suspicion of sexual assault and threats to kill.

The England international was also facing charges of attempted rape, engaging in controlling and coercive behaviour, and assault occasioning actual bodily harm, but there is no longer a case against him, meaning that he is able to resume his football career.

Getafe's decision to sign Greenwood has been criticised due to the sensitive nature of the allegations, but Bordalas is confident that the move will be beneficial for both parties.

"It is a very delicate situation to trivialise this issue. Everyone knows what happened and the appropriate measures were taken, obviously, we can only talk about football," he told reporters.

"Regarding the other issues, I believe that the people and the relevant authorities did what they had to do and everyone knows how it ended with a non-conviction sentence.

"Therefore, he is a free person, a footballer of a very high level and who arrives at Getafe with enormous enthusiasm and that we are obviously going to help him so that he recovers back to his best level.

"'I have already commented what I had to comment. I can only speak on a football level. We all know the potential he has. He is a very young boy, he is still 21 years old and we can help him adapt to a situation.

"It's a different league but because of the potential he has, I'm sure that if he physically reaches a good level, I'm convinced of him because of how young he is and because we've been informed that he obviously wants to recover his professional status and Getafe can help him in that."

Greenwood is allegedly hopeful that a successful loan spell at Getafe could potentially open the door for him to represent Man United again in the future.

Serie A outfit Lazio also made an attempt to sign the forward on transfer deadline day, and the club's president Claudio Lotito has blamed Man United for the deal not going through.

At this stage, it is unclear when Greenwood could be available for selection, as the striker has not been in a competitive environment since January 2022.
