The Toffees closed to within a point of the Gunners in the battle for fourth place in the Premier League and they hold a crucial game in hand over the Londoners.

"In terms of satisfaction that you can get as a manager, that's as good as it gets," he told the club's official website. "I thought the performance from the first minute to the last was very strong in every department of the game.

"Today we had to be perfect in the way we wanted to defend, the way we wanted to use the counter-attack, the way we wanted to be a threat in the final third and the way we wanted to keep possession.

"The players were phenomenal - their awareness, work rate and discipline made it as good a performance as you can get from that point of view."

Everton last finished fourth in the 2004-05 Premier League season, but failed to qualify for the group stages of the Champions League.
