The 27-year-old, who struggled for first-team football last season, has reportedly been told that he can leave Loftus Road this summer following their relegation to the Championship.
According to PA, that has alerted Forest, who are believed to have made a bid for the striker's services.
Mackie has two years remaining on his current deal with the R's.
