David de Gea is holding out for wages of £500,000 a week at Manchester United to bring him level with top earner Alexis Sanchez, according to a report.

Manchester United reportedly risk losing goalkeeper David de Gea unless they make him the club's highest-paid player.

The 28-year-old has less than 18 months to run on his existing deal and United chiefs are worried about losing him as a free agent at the end of next season.

Agreeing fresh terms with De Gea has been high on the agenda for the Red Devils for a number of months but, despite prolonged contract talks, there is still no sign of a new deal being signed.

United are believed to have offered the Spain international around £300,000 a week in wages, though The Telegraph claims that it will take substantially more than that to tie him down.

De Gea, who has attracted interest from Real Madrid and Paris Saint-Germain in the past, is rumoured to be holding out for closer to a £500,000 salary, moving him on par with top earner Alexis Sanchez.

The former Atletico Madrid stopper has been named United's player of the year in four of the last five seasons.
