Mehmet Scholl: 'Mario Gotze does not train enough'

Mario Gotze's struggles at Bayern Munich are down to his negative attitude towards training, according to the club's former midfielder Mehmet Scholl.

Former Bayern Munich midfielder Mehmet Scholl has hit out at Mario Gotze's attitude towards training.

A combination of injuries and a loss of form has meant that 23-year-old Gotze has largely failed to live up to expectations in Munich following his £30m switch from Bundesliga rivals Borussia Dortmund in 2013.

He will enter the final 12 months of his contract at the Allianz Arena in the summer, which has resulted in a report that Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp, who managed Gotze at Dortmund, is extremely keen on a reunion.

However, Scholl has claimed that the playmaker could salvage his Bayern career if he took training more seriously.

"Why can't he produce consistent performances? For me the answer is obvious - he has to train much, much more," he told ARD.

"I remember when he was very young at Dortmund. He was an arrow, he was so fast, he was so athletic. At the moment he is so far removed from that."

Gotze was informed of Scholl's opinion after he had scored in Germany's 4-1 win over Italy last night, to which he replied: "I didn't know that he observes my training, that he is always there. I think that I train enough."

The World Cup winner has made just eight league appearances this term.
