Atletico Madrid could go head-to-head with Barcelona for the signature of Athletic Bilbao centre-back Inigo Martinez, according to a report.

Atletico Madrid are reportedly preparing to go head-to-head with Barcelona for the signature of Athletic Bilbao centre-back Inigo Martinez at the end of the season.

The 31-year-old's contract at San Mames is due to expire at the end of June, and the experienced defender is widely expected to leave the Basque outfit in search of pastures new.

Barcelona have been heavily linked with the Spaniard over the last few months, with the Catalan outfit said to be in the driving seat when it comes to a deal at the end of the campaign.

However, according to AS, Atletico have now presented an offer to Martinez's representatives.

The report claims that Barcelona's financial problems could lead to the Red and Whites moving into pole position, while there is also believed to be interest from Inter Milan.

The Spaniard has been restricted to just 11 appearances in all competitions during the 2022-23 campaign due to a long-standing foot problem.

Martinez has only made nine outings in Spain's top flight this term, with his last appearance in La Liga coming against Girona at the start of November.

However, the defender made his return against Osasuna in the Copa del Rey on Wednesday, playing the full 90 minutes of what proved to be a 1-0 defeat for Athletic.

Martinez is now in line to feature in Sunday's league contest with Rayo Vallecano at Estadio de Vallecas.

A recent report claimed that Barcelona were keeping a close eye on the defender's foot issue this season, with the club having concerns over the long-term impact.

Martinez is said to be suffering with plantar fasciitis - a painful condition which involves the bottom of the foot, the heel and the arch.

"The subject is a bit tiring, but these are things that happen. I am happy here and I feel very comfortable. My future is still not clear at all," Martinez told Onda Vasca towards the end of last year when asked about his future.

"It is neither the time nor the place to talk about these issues of my renewal. I do not lose focus and I'm always giving my best for Athletic.

"I have a contract until the end of the season, I will fight and that is what God wants. I am very happy here, I come every day with a smile and I enjoy Bilbao. I feel loved."

Martinez has made 170 appearances for Athletic since arriving from Real Sociedad in 2018, while he has played 351 times in Spain's top flight during his time with the two Basque teams.
