Wolves vs. Man City: Gary O'Neil backs revival in Premier League

Wolverhampton Wanderers head coach Gary O'Neil backs himself and his players to overturn their poor start to the Premier League campaign.

Wolverhampton Wanderers head coach Gary O'Neil has insisted that he retains "100% faith" that his side can get back on track in the Premier League.

The West Midlands outfit play host to reigning champions Manchester City on Sunday afternoon sitting bottom of the standings with just the solitary point.

A certain level of context is required with Wolves having played Arsenal, Chelsea, Nottingham Forest, Newcastle United, Aston Villa, Liverpool and Brentford.

Nevertheless, pressure is ramping up on O'Neil at a time when Wolves are short of centre-backs and have already conceded 21 goals in the top flight during 2024-25.

Reports have previously suggested that owners Fosun International currently plan to given the Englishman - who only penned a four-year contract in the summer - time to try to turn things around at Molineux.

'I am Wolves' biggest critic'

O'Neil and his squad have had two weeks to dwell on suffering a 5-3 defeat at the hands of Brentford before the international break.

During and after that match, a section of Wolves supporters appeared to turn on O'Neil, but he remained defiant when speaking to the media on Friday afternoon.

He said: "Points-wise it's been very bad. If you look at performances I'll be the biggest critic of my team.

"We sit here seven games in with one point. If you don't look into the depths of how and why it looks like a disaster. There's two very tough games coming up in the next ten days as well.

"But, if you do take the time to look into the situation and the fixtures you will easily see there is enough there to have a real clear view we can turn this around.

"I have 100% faith in myself and the playing group to show everyone we can compete at the level. Really confident and really comfortable I can help the group in this moment and turn things around."

Fixtures continue to go against Wolves

With Southampton hosting Leicester City and Ipswich Town squaring off against Everton on Saturday, Wolves know that at least two of their immediate rivals will be adding points to their tally before they welcome Man City.

Furthermore, Wolves face a trip to Brighton & Hove Albion in their following game, their ninth in succession against opponents who occupy a place in the top 11 of the table.
