Bayern Munich 3-1 Mainz

German giants Bayern Munich defeat Mainz 3-1 at the Allianz Arena in the Bundesliga.

Bayern Munich have registered a 3-1 victory over Mainz at the Allianz Arena in the Bundesliga.

The Bavarian giants went ahead as early as the second minute, when Mario Mandzukic shot home Thomas Muller's cross from close range.

Bayern could have doubled their lead eight minutes later when Muller headed Xherdan Shaqiri's cross from inside the Mainz penalty box, but it was off target.

The hosts did make it 2-0 in the 13th minute, as Bastian Schweinsteiger headed Holger Badstuber's cross from the centre of the box.

Muller came close to adding his side's third a minute later when he narrowly missed the target with a shot from outside the Mainz 18-yard box.

Bayern continued to dominate proceedings and after the break Shaqiri and Jerome Boateng tested visiting goalkeeper Christian Wetklo.

However, it was Mainz who scored the third goal of the afternoon at Allianz Arena in the 59th minute.

Dante's foul on Julian Baumgartlinger inside the Bayern penalty area saw the referee point to the spot, and Adam Szalai made no mistake from 12 yards.

Bayern left it until the second minute of injury time to ascertain the points when Toni Kroos volleyed home Javi Martinez's cross.
