Pablo Cuevas retires in US Open

Pablo Cuevas retires in the US Open in the fourth set against Janko Tipsarevic.

Pablo Cuevas has retired in his US Open match against Janko Tipsarevic with the score at 3-6 7-6 3-6.

The first set was fairly even but Tipsarevic took the advantage, breaking Cuevas's serve to go 4-2 ahead. Tipsarevic then held his next game, as did Cuevas.

However, after a body serve and a short rally, Tipsarevic took the first set 6-3.

The second set started with both players holding their serve to bring up 2-2. A strong body serve from Tipsarevic then produced another short rally that the Serb won to make it 3-3.

Cuevas continued the pattern of play and the set went to a tie-break.

The Uruguayan raced into a 6-0 lead, but Tipsarevic held on and pushed his way back into contention at 5-6.

However, Cuevas got the point he needed to level the match at one set all.

Tipsarevic was the first to sneak ahead in the third, breaking Cuevas to edge into a 5-3 advantage. The Serb held his service game, winning 6-3 to go two sets to one up.

However, shortly after the start of fourth set, Cuevas was forced to retire, handing Tipsarevic the win.
