David Goffin has secured his passage into the third round of the Italian Open, courtesy of a 6-2 4-6 7-5 win over Jo-Wilfried Tsonga.
The Belgian had to save three match points en route to seeing off the number 13 seed, setting up a meeting with Andy Murray for a place in the quarter-finals in the process.
Having held his serve throughout the opening set to take the lead, the 24-year-old struggled to match his opponent in the second and was narrowly edged out as the contest went the distance.
Tsonga found himself 5-4 ahead in the deciding set, but was unable to get over the finish line with his first match point, before missing two more in the following game.
That left Goffin to get the job done and progress to the next round, where he will meet an in-form Murray.
