Carlisle United relegated by record-breaking Wolverhampton Wanderers

Wolves beat Carlisle 3-0 to relegate the Cumbrians and set a League One record for most points won in a season.

Carlisle United have been relegated from League One after losing 3-0 to record-breaking Wolverhampton Wanderers at Molineux this afternoon.

United's stalemate with Crawley Town in midweek had all but sealed their demotion to League Two, but goals from Sam Ricketts, Michael Jacobs and Nouha Dicko confirmed their relegation and helped Wolves set a new league record for most points won in a season - 103.

The division champions needed just five minutes to edge ahead in the contest, as skipper Ricketts cut inside his marker before driving a left-footed shot past Jason Pickford.

Kenny Jackett's side nudged their Cumbrian counterparts nearer toward League Two on 24 minutes through Jacobs, who headed home a Scott Golbourne cross to bag his eighth of the season.

January signing Dicko then staked his claim to finish as the club's leading goalscorer by adding a third on 54 minutes to reach 12 for the season, moving level with Bakary Sako and Leigh Griffiths - the latter of whom moved to Celtic in mid-season.

Jack Price and Lee Evans came close to adding a fourth but Wanderers settled for three as Jackett's men rounded off a successful League One campaign in emphatic fashion.
