Matthew Etherington says it is "nice" to score against former club Tottenham Hotspur.

Stoke midfielder Matthew Etherington has said that he loves scoring against his former club Tottenham after his two goals on Sunday put an end to Spurs' run of 11 unbeaten games.

Etherington played for Tottenham between 2000 and 2003 before leaving for West Ham.

"I've scored a few against Tottenham now which is nice. And to get the win as well is a double bonus," Etherington said. "It's been mentioned Peter Crouch may have handled before the first goal but, if he did, the ref hasn't seen it.

"I was luckily in the right spot to put it away but Tottenham are a top side.

"We knew we'd be under pressure and it's about how we defended as a team. And I thought we did it brilliantly. We ran ourselves into the ground, it was a great result."

Etherington also defended referee Chris Foy, after Spurs boss Harrry Redknapp questioned the officials' decisions during the game.

"Should they have had more [penalty decisions]? Not that I know of, they got one," he said.

"The ref had a good game."

Stoke are currently eighth in the Premier League with 21 points from 15 games.
