Melbourne City return to winning ways

Melbourne City hit four unanswered goals against the Newcastle Jets to move up to sixth in the A-League.

Melbourne City ended a run of two straight defeats courtesy of a 4-0 home victory over struggling Newcastle Jets this morning.

It was an A-League encounter that was dominated throughout by the hosts, who broke the deadlock in the 18th minute.

Making his debut for City following his recent switch from the Jets, Dutch defender Kew Jaliens returned to haunt his former employers when he fired in from a corner.

As the half progressed, John van 't Schip's men continued to create chances on a regular basis, but Harry Novillo in particular was wasteful.

However, just two minutes after the restart, the French winger made amends. The visiting rearguard failed to clear their lines and were punished as Novillo, scoring his first goal for the club, found the bottom corner of the net.

The scoreline was made even more convincing by substitute David Williams in the 63rd minute, before Iain Ramsey added a fourth goal two minutes from time when he slotted in from close range.

The result has kept the Jets, who are now on a 10-game winless run, bottom of the table, while City move up to sixth.
