MK Dons thrash Manchester United to leave Louis van Gaal still winless

Manchester United slump to a humiliating 4-0 defeat at the hands of MK Dons in the second round of the League Cup, piling more misery on new boss Louis van Gaal.

Manchester United's miserable start to the season hit a new low this evening as they were humbled by League One side MK Dons in the second round of the League Cup.

Will Grigg scored either side of half time and Benik Afobe added a second-half brace for the hosts as they pulled off a famous cup upset at stadium:mk, running out 4-0 winners.

United almost took the lead after just five minutes when Reece James found Nick Powell, who fired an effort narrowly over the top from the edge of the box.

The opening goal came 20 minutes later as Ben Reeves pounced on a Jonny Evans mistake before slipping a pass to Grigg, who had a simple finish from close range.

United almost levelled the scores on the hour mark as sub Andreas Pereira found Danny Welbeck, but the England international could not hit the target with his powerful effort from the edge of the box.

Grigg got his second of the night just three minutes later as he took advantage of some poor marking, chesting Reeves's cross down before finishing past David de Gea.

Things got even worse for Louis van Gaal's side with 20 minutes remaining as Afobe beat the offside trap before rolling the ball into the back of the net.

United looked for a response through James Wilson, who forced a fine stop from David Martin with a curling effort towards the top corner.

Adnan Januzaj then came within inches of restoring some pride for the Red Devils, but his powerful effort struck the outside of the post.

The humiliation was complete with six minutes of normal time remaining as Afobe once again broke through the United defence before firing past De Gea to cap off a remarkable victory for the League One side.

Wilson did come close to grabbing the slimmest of consolations for United late on, but once again Martin was there to deny the Englishman as United were left still looking for their first victory under Van Gaal.
