Jamie Carragher: Defence "a big problem" for Liverpool

Jamie Carragher believes that a lack of strengthening in defence this summer could cost Liverpool a chance of competing for the Premier League title.

Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher has warned Jurgen Klopp that he must further strengthen his defence following their "poor" showing at Burnley.

The Reds shipped two goals in the first half at Turf Moor on Saturday afternoon as they slipped to a 2-0 defeat.

Despite dominating possession, seeing 80% of the ball overall in Lancashire, it was a disappointing setback for Liverpool a week on from conceding three times in victory against Arsenal.

Carragher believes that his former side's backline needs major addressing over the next 11 days if they are to seriously challenge for the Premier League title this season.

"The defence is a big problem," he told Sky Sports News. "It was a big problem under Brendan Rodgers and it doesn't look like it has been rectified. Klopp's had a summer now and looked at where he needs to strengthen but the big-money buys have been at the other end of the pitch.

"Don't forget Liverpool still conceded three goals last weekend. Defensively again they were poor. It was a different kind of defending as well for long spells of the game they didn't really have to defend too much within the game. There were a lot of counter-attacks and plenty of possession, maybe the opposite of last week and they couldn't deal with it.

"[Andre] Gray had Ragnar Klavan and Dejan Lovren every time he went into the channels. Every time the ball went down the sides he was causing them problems and the killer goal is the second because it makes it very difficult against a team like Burnley, who are so good defensively."

Liverpool conceded a total of 50 goals last season, while also keeping 11 clean sheets - bettered by just six other top-flight sides.
