Preview: Chelsea vs. Sunderland

Sports Mole previews the Premier League encounter between champions Chelsea and Sunderland.

Chelsea host Sunderland at Stamford Bridge on Sunday afternoon as they look to cap off their title-winning campaign with another three points.

Sunderland return to London just four days after retaining their Premier League status at Arsenal, and caretaker boss Dick Advocaat will hope to guide his side to another impressive result in England's capital.

Since the opening day of the season, the 2014-15 Premier League has been dominated by Chelsea, but securing the title with three games to spare has resulted in two below-par displays from Jose Mourinho's side.

After they were held to a 1-1 draw by Liverpool, the Blues suffered a disappointing 3-0 defeat at the hands of West Bromwich Albion.

Mourinho has taken the opportunity to rotate players and blood a couple of youngsters, but he would not have been pleased with his team's capitulation at The Hawthorns.

The first-half dismissal of Cesc Fabregas didn't help, but the loss was Mourinho's heaviest defeat in the Premier League since the 3-0 reverse at Middlesbrough in 2006.

A number of injuries and suspensions mean that Mourinho's hands are tied regarding selection for Sunday's game, but the Portuguese will demand an improved display, despite much of the attention potentially being on goodbyes to Petr Cech and Didier Drogba.

Chelsea have some milestones to maintain though, with the club looking to remain undefeated at Stamford Bridge for the season while John Terry will want to complete every minute of the campaign in the centre of defence.

Striker Diego Costa, who returned from injury on Monday night, is also targeting his 20th league goal in his debut year in England.

Sunderland

Sunderland looked down and out after being thrashed by Crystal Palace on April 11, but since that day, caretaker manager Dick Advocaat has performed a minor miracle to ensure that the club remains in the Premier League.

Over the course of the past five games, Sunderland have won nine points, eight of which have come against clubs who occupy a top-10 position in the standings.

Their last two trips have seen them see off Everton by a 2-0 scoreline before they earned a 0-0 draw away at Arsenal on Wednesday night, a result that will long be remembered by everyone associated with the North-East outfit.

Sunderland had opportunities of their own during the second half at the Emirates Stadium, but their resilience, especially in the final 30 minutes, is testament to the spirit built by Advocaat.

It remains to be seen whether this will be his final fixture in charge of the club but nevertheless, this is a fixture that Sunderland will just want to enjoy after the threat of relegation since the turn of the year.

However, with 14th place still achievable and 17th a possibility, Sunderland still have something to play for as they look for another surprise result.

Team News

Chelsea are expected to be without winger Eden Hazard after he had three wisdom teeth removed earlier this week.

Ramires, Oscar and Kurt Zouma are also absent, Petr Cech is doubtful, while Fabregas misses out through suspension.

Mourinho has indicated that Jeremie Boga and Andreas Christensen could join Ruben Loftus-Cheek and Izzy Brown in his 18-man squad.

Advocaat may rest midfielder Lee Cattermole, with the Black Cats skipper in danger of picking up a booking that would earn him a three-game ban.

Costel Pantilimon has been ruled out with a knee problem and Danny Graham has an ankle injury, but Sebastian Larsson is expected to feature despite picking up a knock in midweek.

Chelsea possible starting lineup:
Courtois, Ivanovic, Cahill, Terry, Luis, Loftus-Cheek, Matic, Remy, Mikel, Cuadrado, Costa

Sunderland possible starting lineup:
Mannone; Jones, O'Shea, Coates, van Aanholt; Rodwell, Larsson; Johnson, Fletcher, Defoe, Wickham

Head To Head

Sunday will be the 109th meeting between the two sides, with Chelsea recording 53 victories and Sunderland not too far behind on 36 wins.

Perhaps surprisingly, Sunderland are unbeaten in their last three games against the Blues, which includes a 0-0 draw at the Stadium of Light earlier this season.

However, Chelsea have won eight of the last 11 contests that have been staged at Stamford Bridge.

We say: Chelsea 2-1 Sunderland

With Chelsea being presented with the Premier League trophy after full time, there is likely to be a party atmosphere inside Stamford Bridge. The game could be played at a friendly pace, but the Blues will want to keep hold of their unbeaten record in front of their home fans.
