Grimsby Town come from behind to beat Barnet

Grimsby Town overturn an early deficit to secure a 3-1 win over Barnet in the Conference Premier.

Grimsby Town recovered from conceding an early penalty to secure a 3-1 win over Barnet in the Conference Premier this afternoon.

The visitors were awarded a penalty less than five minutes after the match got underway when Aristote Nsiala tripped John Akinde in the box, leaving the Barnet man to convert from the spot.

It did not take Grimsby long to get back on level terms though, as Ollie Palmer pounced after a Lenell John-Lewis shot was punched clear, leaving Palmer to fire in from the edge of the box.

John-Lewis was involved again shortly after as he tried to put the home side ahead, but he was bundled down by David Stephens, giving Grimsby a penalty.

John-Lewis took the spot kick himself, beating the keeper with a right-footed effort to the centre of the net to give the home side the lead.

Grimsby extended their lead early in the second half when Palmer headed the ball for Jack Mackreth to tap into the bottom corner from close range.

Palmer continued to stretch the visitors, forcing a save with a long-range effort before sending the rebound wide of the left post.

Grimsby continued to look the more likely as the match progressed, with the home side pushing to extend their advantage, but they were unable to find the target again.

Despite the defeat, Barnet remain six points clear at the top of the table, while Grimsby sit fourth.
