Half-Time Report: Atletico Madrid on course for La Liga top spot

David Villa's 38th-minute strike gives Atletico Madrid a half-time lead against Real Sociedad as they look to go top of La Liga.

Atletico Madrid are 45 minutes away from going top of La Liga as they lead Real Sociedad 1-0 at half time.

Following Barcelona's loss to Valencia yesterday, Atleti just need a point against Sociedad to move into first place.

The hosts' top scorer Diego Costa had the first effort inside six minutes when he drove past a couple of challenges, but his shot was tipped away by Claudio Bravo.

Soon after, the hosts did have the ball in the net, but David Villa's effort was ruled out for offside after he had rounded Bravo and rolled home.

It would be Villa who would break the deadlock in the 38th minute, sweeping home Costa's low cross from the left.

The Spaniard wasn't on the field for much longer, though, as he had to be withdrawn soon after the goal because of injury.
