Manchester United are reportedly growing increasingly confident of eventually winning the race for their priority left-back target in the summer transfer window.

Manchester United are reportedly preparing to push hard for the signature of Bayern Munich defender Alphonso Davies.

Ever since he entered the final 18 months of his contract, the future of the left-sided player has been a hot topic for debate.

Having starred for the Bundesliga giants since 2019, his current club are naturally eager for the Canada international to sign fresh terms.

However, having chosen not to cash in on Davies during the last summer transfer window, there is an increasing possibility of Bayern losing one of their most prized assets on a free transfer in July.

Real Madrid are known to be long-term admirers of the 23-year-old and it would come as a surprise if they opted against opening formal discussions with him at the turn of the year.

Nevertheless, it is claimed that Man United are ready to rival Los Blancos in the race for Davies should his current situation continue.

United up Davies interest

According to Sky Sport Deutschland, United have 'submitted an informal enquiry' to Davies' representatives regarding a potential deal.

With Real yet to do so, it is suggested that the Red Devils have stolen a march on their rivals in an effort to make a standout addition for next season onwards.

The alleged development is a result of the proactiveness of INEOS, who are yet to decide whether they will retain the services of Erik ten Hag in the long term.

Although the Dutchman has avoided defeat in his last four matches, there have been three draws and a comeback win at home to Brentford in the Premier League.

Regardless of whether Ten Hag stays at Old Trafford, United are desperate for a new left-back given the long-term injury issues to Luke Shaw and Tyrell Malacia.

While both players may be available again in the coming weeks, Ten Hag has largely had to work without a recognised player for that position since the start of last season.

Are United capable of edging out Real?

As a result of Bayern indicating that they are not prepared to meet Davies' current wage demands, it currently seems to be a straight fight between United and Real.

Barring an unexpected downturn in fortunes, Real are guaranteed Champions League football each season and have the funds to attract Davies to Madrid.

From United's perspective, they may need a top-four finish or Europa League trophy to tempt Davies into a switch to the Theatre of Dreams, while United themselves may need Champions League football to justify offering him such a lucrative proposal.
