Barbora Strycova caused an upset in the first round of the Mutua Madrid Open this afternoon by dumping out Eugenie Bouchard in three sets.
Sixth seed Bouchard was completely dominant in the first set, winning all six games to race into an early lead after less than half an hour.
Strycova, of the Czech Republic, got on the board with her first service game of the second set, but Bouchard was the first to break and moved 3-1 ahead.
World number 22 Strycova then stormed to the set by winning five games in a row to force a decider.
In the third, it was Strycova who broke to go 3-1 in front and she did not give up the advantage like Bouchard in the second, coming through 6-3 to reach the second round, where she will face either Varvara Lepchenko or Andreea Mitu.
