Wigan Athletic ease past Sheffield Wednesday

Wigan Athletic see off Sheffield Wednesday with an impressive performance at Hillsborough.

Wigan Athletic have secured a comprehensive away win against Sheffield Wednesday at Hillsborough.

The away side made a positive start, and James McClean wriggled free in the box. He played it to the edge of the area for Ben Watson, who fired wide.

The Latics then failed to clear as Jean Beausejour's short back-pass to Leon Barnett was missed, meaning that Atdhe Nuhiu was in on goal. However, his shot dribbled into the hands of Ali Al-Habsi.

Nicky Maynard made the home side pay for that miss with his first goal for Wigan just minutes later. The striker received the ball down the right and headed towards goal, before firing a low shot into the bottom corner.

Wigan doubled their lead just before the break. Martyn Waghorn's delivery from a corner fooled everyone and Maynard managed to get a touch on the ball before it went in at the near post.

Maynard hit an effort wide of the right post early in the second half as Uwe Rosler's men looked for a third goal.

Nuhiu probably should have pulled a goal back for the Owls, but his close-range header from Michail Antonio's cross went wide.

James McArthur then smacked a shot wide after good work by Maynard, who also tried a speculative effort from 30 yards.

With time running out, Marc-Antoine Fortune grabbed the away side's third of the night.
