Villarreal reach Copa del Rey semi-finals after seeing off Getafe

Villarreal reach the semi-finals of the Copa del Rey, their 1-0 second-leg victory away at Getafe giving the Yellow Submarine a 2-0 win on aggregate.

Villarreal have reached the semi-finals of the Copa del Rey after their 1-0 second-leg victory away at Getafe this evening secured a 2-0 win on aggregate for the Yellow Submarine.

The hosts were first to threaten at the Coliseum Alfonso Perez when Pedro Leon fired an effort towards the far post in the fifth minute, but the ball was tipped away by goalkeeper Sergio Asenjo.

However, the visitors were able to work their way into the game and, on the quarter-hour mark, Manu Trigueiros's curling effort took a deflection and looped just over the bar.

On the stroke of half time, Getafe came within a whisker of opening the scoring on the night, but a well-placed Leon scuffed his shot wide of the post.

The hosts continued to threaten after the break and caused panic in the Villarreal defence when Freddy Hinestroza's cross from the left smashed against the bar.

For all of Getafe's efforts, however, Villarreal were able to kill off the tie in the 79th minute when Gerard Moreno, played in by Denis Cheryshev, went on to round the keeper and poke the ball into the empty net.

Villarreal will take on Barcelona in the semi-finals of the Copa del Rey.
