Sunderland manager Dick Advocaat has insisted that Jermain Defoe will have benefited mentally from the two goals that he scored during last night's friendly against his former club Toronto.
The ex-England international scored twice to secure a 2-1 win for the Black Cats in what was their final game on their tour of Canada.
Looking ahead to the new Premier League campaign, Advocaat stressed that the brace would have been "important" for the 32-year-old.
"The two goals are important for Jermain. It will be a good boost to his confidence, they were good goals and we've still got another two games to go before the season starts so hopefully there'll be more to come," he told the club's official website.
Defoe, who signed on at the Stadium of Light in January, has scored four competitive goals for the Wearsiders.
