Champions Real Madrid start the new La Liga season with a 1-1 draw at home to Valencia.

Champions Real Madrid have started the new La Liga season with a 1-1 draw at home to Valencia.

The hosts made the breakthrough after 10 minutes as Gonzalo Higuain broke the offside trap before firing into the roof of the net at the third time of asking.

Jose Mourinho's men then had the opportunity to double their lead before the break, but Fabio Coentrao greedily went for goal instead of squaring to the unmarked Mesut Ozil.

They were made to pay on 43 minutes as Jonas beat Iker Casillas to the ball to head in Tino Costa's free kick.

Casillas collided with teammate Pepe during the goal and the defender had to be taken off with a gash to his head.

Angel Di Maria then dragged his shot wide before he crossed for Higuain, who hit the crossbar with a header.

As Madrid bombarded the Valencia goal, Jose Callejon saw his drive pushed away by Diego Alves.

The home side continued to press, but they were unable to score a winner past a determined visiting defence.
