Alan Shearer claims that financial reasons could be behind Loic Remy's decision to choose Queens Park Rangers over Newcastle United.

Former Newcastle United striker Alan Shearer has revealed his surprise at seeing Loic Remy choose to sign for Queens Park Rangers.

The French forward looked like he would join the Magpies last week until a fresh bid from Rangers tempted the Marseille ace to move to Loftus Road.

Shearer told The Express: "I have to say I do find it hard to say why he chose QPR over Newcastle. Anybody can choose what they want and I am going to be biased. I will tell you what a great football club it is.

"But it is a tough one for the fans to see Remy so close and then choose QPR. Harry will tell you a different story but I would have a good guess that financial things had a part to play.

"Why he did it, you'll have to ask him. But it's left Newcastle with a huge gap to fill. The manager has tried to do that. Hopefully, they will have a plan B and a plan C. They are desperately in need of players."

Remy's move to QPR has reportedly made the striker the club's record signing.
