Louis van Gaal: 'I expected more from Memphis Depay'

Louis van Gaal says that Memphis Depay has not lived up to his expectations so far this season.

Louis van Gaal has said that Memphis Depay must improve if he is to reclaim his place in the Manchester United starting lineup.

The 21-year-old has not started for United since their 3-0 loss to Arsenal at the beginning of October.

"Of course [I expected more], otherwise he would still be in the team," Van Gaal told reporters. "Otherwise I wouldn't look for another solution, and I have looked for another solution in my team.

"I have kept Jesse Lingard and Andreas Pereira, for example, for that option, so now he has to fight back and he does it, so I'm satisfied.

"He is always looking very good in training. There's always a chance [he can play]. But I have to see and compare players."

The Netherlands international signed for Manchester United for a fee of £25m in the summer.
