Gary McAllister: 'Penalty shootout win will provide boost'

Assistant manager Gary McAlliser claims that Liverpool's penalty shootout win over Carlisle United could begin a resurgence.

Gary McAllister has claimed that Liverpool's penalty shootout triumph over Carlisle United could provide the squad with a crucial boost.

The side's recent struggles continued as they found it difficult against League Two opposition, before Adam Bogdan made the vital saves after the game ended 1-1 in 120 minutes.

Despite being forced into a battle on the way to the fourth round of the League Cup, McAllister believes that the success could be a turning point.

"When it comes to a penalty shoot-out, there is that coming together of players in the middle of the pitch and we've stepped forward and got through," the assistant manager told reporters after taking over press conference duties from Brendan Rodgers.

"We've shown that bit of character and we're delighted for Adam Bogdan, making the saves to get us through.

"Maybe this is one of those little things that can just pull us together as we look forward to the weekend."

Liverpool will now prepare for the visit of Aston Villa to Anfield on Saturday.
