Chelsea are reportedly hoping to sign Christian Pulisic from Borussia Dortmund for less than the German club's £70m asking price.
The Blues are understood to have been locked in discussions with Dortmund over a January deal for the United States international, who has also been touted as a target for Liverpool.
Rather than making Pulisic their second-most expensive player ever behind Kepa Arrizabalaga, however, Goal.com reports that Chelsea will instead negotiate down the fee as talks progress.
Pulisic, due to be out of contract at the end of next season, has been used 14 times in all competitions by Dortmund this season.
Chelsea are said to be keen to bring in a new wide player to compensate for the potential loss of Eden Hazard to Real Madrid, with Barcelona's Ousmane Dembele and Nabil Fekir of Lyon other rumoured options.
