Chelsea team news: Injury, suspension list vs. Liverpool

Sports Mole rounds up Chelsea's latest injury and suspension news ahead of Sunday's Premier League clash with Liverpool.

Chelsea will be determined to produce an improved performance in front of their own fans when they meet with Premier League leaders Liverpool on Sunday.

Frank Lampard's side, despite creating some good chances, suffered a disappointing 1-0 defeat at the hands of Valencia in the Champions League on Tuesday.

They will be determined to rediscover the cut and thrust which saw them cruise to an impressive 5-2 away win over Wolverhampton Wanderers last weekend.

Here, Sports Mole rounds up Chelsea's latest injury and suspension news ahead of the weekend's showpiece event.

Mason Mount

Status: Major doubt
Type of injury: Ankle
Possible return date: Unknown

The Englishman, one of Lampard's star performers of the season so far, was on the receiving end of a nasty late challenge which forced him off after just 15 minutes against Valencia. Liverpool on Sunday is likely to come too early for Mount, who underwent scans on Wednesday.

N'Golo Kante

Status: Major doubt
Type of injury: Ankle
Possible return date: September 22 (vs. Chelsea)

Kante returned to training on Monday, with Lampard confirming that the midfielder was in the "final steps" of his recovery. However, he did not feature in any capacity against Valencia and his manager may decide against risking him in such a high-intensity game. The ankle problem plaguing Kante first occurred ahead of the Europa League final in May, which means that the problem will need to be handled carefully.

Emerson Palmieri

Status: Out
Type of injury: Thigh
Possible return date: Unknown

Emerson sustained an injury over the international break, with Lampard insisting that the knock was not serious, but the Italian is yet to feature in any capacity for the Blues this month and is not expected to return in time for this game.

Antonio Rudiger

Status: Out
Type of injury: Groin
Possible return date: Unknown

Rudiger made his first appearance since suffering a knee injury in April against Wolves, only to come off at half time after slipping over when leaving the field. Lampard initially claimed that the substitution was precautionary, with the defender injuring his groin rather than aggravating the same knee problem, but the Blues boss has since confirmed that Rudiger would require scans on his groin, which he revealed had troubled the 26-year-old for a few weeks.

Ruben Loftus-Cheek

Status: Out
Type of injury: Achilles
Possible return date: November 2 (vs. Watford)

The Englishman remains some way from returning from his Achilles injury, something sustained back in May, and is not expected to return to first-team action until November at the earliest.

Callum Hudson-Odoi

Status: Major doubt
Type of injury: Achilles
Possible return date: September 22 (vs. Liverpool)

Hudson-Odoi picked up a similar Achilles problem to Loftus-Cheek in May but has made a return to training this week, which means that it is only a matter of building up fitness before reentering the fray at Stamford Bridge. Lampard may include him in the squad on Sunday.

Reece James

Status: Major doubt
Type of injury: Ankle
Possible return date: September 22 (vs. Liverpool)

James has been injured since the start of the season and was expected to return to action by the end of August, although this did not materialise. However, the teenager is back in training and, while an appearance against Chelsea is highly unlikely, it will not be long before supporters see him in action.

Marco van Ginkel

Status: Out
Type of injury: Knee
Possible return date: Unknown

Largely forgotten at Chelsea, Van Ginkel continues to work his way back to fitness after suffering a severe anterior cruciate ligament injury over a year ago. There remains no timescale regarding as to when the Dutchman could potentially return.
