Arsene Wenger says that signing a new defender is unecessary as he expects Arsenal's current absentees to return to the side within the next month.

Arsene Wenger has claimed that he will not be searching for a new full-back when the January transfer window opens next week.

It has been well documented that the Gunners are thin on the ground when it comes to defensive cover due to a number of injuries. However, the Frenchman has insisted that there is no need to bring in a fresh face.

"At the moment it is very difficult because we have players out who are short to come back," Wenger told the club's official website. "There are difficult decisions to make because we are short in the full-back positions.

"But you think, 'do you really want to buy a full-back for three or four years?' When you have four out and two close to coming back. I think no, because we have people who can do the job during this period."

Bacary Sagna and Kieron Gibbs are expected to return to the side at the end of next month following their bout with injuries.

Meanwhile, the North London side are reportedly on the verge of signing Arsenal legend Thierry Henry on a two-month loan.
