Former Ajax boss Co Adriaanse has claimed that Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal is keen on returning to the Dutch club to take charge of their youth academy.
The Dutchman won three Eredivisie titles, one Champions League trophy and the UEFA Cup during his six-year spell at Ajax between 1991 and 1997.
There are rumours that Van Gaal could be sacked by United at the end of the season, and Adriaanse believes that the 64-year-old, who has also worked as Ajax's sporting director, could be given a way out in Amsterdam.
"Van Gaal has the ambition to become head of the youth academy at Ajax," Adriaanse told NOS. "That's what he enjoys doing most and what he has been wanting to do for a decade or so."
Van Gaal, who joined United in the summer of 2014, has one year remaining on his contract at Old Trafford.
