Los Angeles Galaxy star David Beckham says that the fact that Real Madrid, Barcelona and Manchester United have all visited the USA on pre-season tours speaks volumes for the standard of football in the MLS.

Los Angeles Galaxy midfielder David Beckham has defended the standard of football in the MLS.

The former England captain was widely criticised when he joined the Californian franchise from Real Madrid in 2007.

However, five years, 89 appearances and 14 Galaxy goals later, the 37-year-old is still plying his trade in North America.

"In the last five years we've seen the likes of Real Madrid, Barcelona and Manchester United coming over here to spend their pre-season playing MLS teams," said Beckham.

"That tells you something because you don't get the likes of Sir Alex Ferguson or Jose Mourinho bringing their teams over if it's not competitive."

Beckham was not selected in Great Britain's 18-man football squad for the upcoming Olympic Games, however he is one of 35 players on standby.
