Eren Derdiyok's hattrick helps Switerland defeat Germany in a free-scoring affair at St Jakob-Park.

Switzerland have become the first team to score five goals against Germany in over eight years after completing a 5-3 win over their neighbours at St Jakob-Park.

Eren Derdiyok, who had only scored seven goals in his previous 37 internationals, netted a hat-trick in the free-scoring affair.

The Hoffenheim forward struck an early double to put his side two goals ahead after 23 minutes and, after Mats Hummels had pulled one back in first-half stoppage time, he completed his three-goal haul with a powerful header from Tranquillo Barnetta's free kick five minutes after the break.

Andre Schurrle pulled a goal back on 64 minutes, but Stephan Lichtsteiner restored Switzerland's two-goal advantage three minutes later.

Marco Reus's thunderous effort gave the Germans hope once more 18 minutes from time, but Admir Mehmedi's first international goal ended their challenge moments later.

Germany had not shipped five goals in a match since losing 5-1 to Romania in April 2004.
