Nottingham Forest begin Championship season with narrow win over Millwall

Barrie McKay's solitary goal is enough to help Nottingham Forest to a 1-0 win over Millwall in Friday night's Championship opener at the City Ground.

Nottingham Forest have claimed a 1-0 win over Millwall in their first game of the 2017-18 Championship season.

The Lions were quickest out of the starting blocks and won a free kick in a dangerous position in the third minute, but Jed Wallace's delivery was too heavy and sailed wide of the back post.

Not long after, George Saville let rip with an effort from inside the area which was also off target, while Aiden O'Brien's header in the 11th minute was straight at Reds stopper Jordan Smith.

Opportunities continued to come Millwall's way as Steve Morison struck the post with a header from point-blank range, while Lee Gregory and O'Brien weighed in with yet more efforts.

Forest, however, grew as the first half ticked on and, in the 41st minute, they took the lead via a powerful effort from Barrie McKay which flew past Lions keeper Jordan Archer.

The second half proved to be a more evenly contested affair, with Tendai Darikwa providing pinpoint crosses for both Ben Brereton and Daryl Murphy, but neither were able to convert their chances.

Millwall had Archer to thank for sprinting off his line and denying Jed Wallace from close range just after the hour, while at the other end, Morison saw a goal ruled out for offside.

Ultimately, the visitors had no answer to Forest's opener, ensuring that Mark Warburton's charges would claim all three points from their opening game of the season.
