Argentina great Diego Maradona has revealed that he tried to persuade Real Madrid to sign Sergio Aguero.
Manchester City signed the 23-year-old for £38m from Atletico Madrid and he has begun life well in England, scoring eight Premier League goals in his first five games.
Aguero is married to Maradona's daughter Gianna but it has emerged that the 50-year-old wanted his son-in-law to move to Atletico's local rivals Real.
Former Argentina manager Maradona, who is now coach of Al Wasl in Dubai, said: “I had given advice to Real to sign Aguero.
"I told Mourinho he’s very good and would fit into Real’s plans and style of play. He would have made them much more competitive and they would have risen to the same level as Barcelona.
“I really believe they lost out when they didn’t sign him.”
Aguero was an unused sub in City's 2-0 Carling Cup win over Birmingham.
