Bayern Munich are understood to have signed Athletic Bilbao's Javi Martinez for around £30m on a five-year deal.

Bayern Munich are understood to have signed Athletic Bilbao defensive midfielder Javi Martinez for €40m (£31m).

The Spaniard had been linked with moves to Manchester City and Manchester United.

However, the 23-year-old has opted to join the Bundesliga club on a five-year deal, according to German newspaper Bild.

Martinez was part of the Spanish squad that won the 2010 World Cup and Euro 2012.
