Barcelona in no hurry to renew Lionel Messi's contract

Barcelona president Sandro Rosell is calm about extending Lionel Messi's current contract that runs out in June 2016.

Barcelona president Sandro Rosell has insisted that there is no hurry to renew forward Lionel Messi's contract.

The Argentine's current deal lasts until June 2016 and he has already stated his desire to remain with the Spanish club longer.

"We are confident that Lionel Messi will remain with us beyond next season," Rosell told El Periodico.

"[His contract renewal] could be tomorrow or next year. His contract runs out in 2016 and it would be irresponsible for us not to extend it.

"At Barcelona we do not create controversy. We simply are Barcelona and we are a Catalan club. While we direct the club, we will not be used for politics."

Messi has won La Liga five times and the Champions League three times with Barcelona.
