Arsene Wenger "scared" of Arsenal exit

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger admits that he is "scared" of the prospect of retirement heading into the last year of his contract with the Gunners.

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has admitted that he is "scared" by the prospect of leaving the club.

The Frenchman, who is heading into the last season of his contract with the Gunners, has spent almost 20 years at the helm, during which time he has won three league titles and six FA Cup crowns.

The 66-year-old's tenure has been questioned in recent years, though, and Wenger confirmed that he is not looking forward to retirement.

"It's been my life and, honestly, I'm quite scared of the day. The longer I wait, the more difficult it will be and the more difficult it will be to lose the addiction," he told The Guardian.

"After [Sir] Alex [Ferguson] retired and we played them over there [at Manchester United] he sent a message to me to come up and have a drink with him. I asked: 'Do you miss it?' He said: 'Not at all.'

"I didn't understand that. It's an emptiness in your life, especially when you've lived your whole life waiting for the next game and trying to win it."

Wenger has won just two major trophies in his last 11 years as Arsenal manager.
