Three Wigan Athletic directors to step down following Dave Whelan exit

Wigan Athletic announce that directors Phillip Williams, Brian Ashcroft and John Winstanley will leave the club at the end of the season following Dave Whelan's exit.

Wigan Athletic have announced that three of the club's directors will step down from their roles at the end of the season following Dave Whelan's resignation as chairman.

The 78-year-old, who was banned by the Football Association for six weeks following comments about Jewish and Chinese people, resigned from the Championship club yesterday.

Whelan has handed over the job to his 23-year-old grandson David Sharpe, but vice-chairman Phillip Williams, Brian Ashcroft and John Winstanley have all decided to step down from the board of directors.

A statement on the Latics' official website read: "Following Mr Whelan's departure from the board, the directors felt it was the right time to move aside to allow the incoming chairman to shape the future, but will remain in place for the rest of the season to assist David Sharpe and Jonathan Jackson during this transitional period."

Williams and Winstanley have been part of the Wigan board since 1995 and Ashcroft joined one year later.
