Tottenham Hotspur striker Jermain Defoe is forced to leave the North London club's pre-season tour following the death of his cousin.

Tottenham Hotspur striker Jermain Defoe will leave the club's pre-season tour in the United States early due to the death of his cousin.

The Premier League club have announced that the England international will play no more part in the side's pre-season preparations after discovering the tragic news regarding his family member, Hannah Defoe.

A statement on the club's official website said: "Jermain Defoe is to return home from our pre-season tour of the United States after receiving the tragic news of the death of his cousin Hannah Defoe while on holiday in St Lucia.

"Everyone at the club sends their sincere condolences to Jermain and his family and all our thoughts are with them at this sad time."

This is the second family bereavement for the frontman, who had to pull out of England's Euro 2012 squad temporarily after learning the death of his father.
