Brian McDermott says that Manchester United showed Reading respect when the two sides met on Saturday.

Reading manager Brian McDermott believes that Manchester United showed his side respect during their meeting at the weekend.

The Royals twice led at the Madejski before Robin van Persie scored the winner to earn United a 4-3 victory.

Despite the defeat, McDermott is proud of his team's performance.

"I am proud of the efforts of the players and we are trying to play the way we want to," McDermott told talkSPORT. "We scored three goals but have not got the result we would have liked. We got plenty of balls into the box and could have scored more.

"We got a lot of respect from Manchester United."

Reading travel to Southampton on Saturday.
