QPR manager Mark Hughes expects his side to improve upon last season's 17th-place finish.

Queens Park Rangers manager Mark Hughes has challenged his team to improve on their performances last season.

QPR survived on the last day of the season, despite losing 3-2 to Manchester City in dramatic fashion, but have significantly strengthened their squad over the summer.

Hughes has been very busy during the transfer window, and believes that his new signings will help the club avoid being dragged into another relegation battle.

"We have set ourselves targets in terms of points and what we want to achieve," he said.

"I think it is important that certainly we improve on the position we were able to achieve last season - it was too close for comfort for everyone involved with QPR and we don't anticipate that is going to be the case this year.

"We are fully aware that the Premier League is a very difficult league but I feel, and the whole club from top to bottom feels, that the quality that we have been able to bring in means we won't find ourselves in the same position."

QPR begin their Premier League campaign at home to Swansea City tomorrow.
