Queens Park Rangers chairman Tony Fernandes has said that the club have put the Joey Barton saga to bed.

The controversial midfielder saw red on the final day of the season against Manchester City after first elbowing at Carlos Tevez, then kneeing Sergio Aguero in the back, before attempting to headbutt Vincent Kompany.

The episode prompted the FA to hit Barton with a 12-game ban and a fine for £75,000, while QPR imposed further financial punishment on the 29-year-old in the sum of £420,000.

Fernandes said that it is now down to Barton to prove his worth to the team.

"Joey's realised his mistakes and hopefully we can put this behind us," said Fernandes. "I am someone who believes everybody deserves a chance — as long as that someone shows they want the chance.

"For me, it's now down to Joey. I can say whatever I want, but it's all up to Joey."

Barton moved to Loftus Road from Newcastle United last year.
