International retirement not on Aaron Hughes's mind

Aaron Hughes insists that he is not considering international retirement again and is in fact eyeing the 100-cap milestone.

Northern Ireland defender Aaron Hughes has said that he is not giving any thought to again retiring from international football anytime soon.

Former captain Hughes called time on his international career at the end of the Euro 2012 qualifying campaign at the age of 31, but was talked back into it by incoming manager Michael O'Neill.

The Fulham man has missed the last four games for his country because of injury but he is back in the squad for Friday's friendly against Turkey.

"I haven't thought about retirement," said Hughes ahead of the match in Adana, where he will earn his 88th cap.

"The last time I thought long and hard about it and it felt right at the time.

"I then spoke to Michael and I liked a lot of things he was saying. I also really missed it and any time there was a game I thought a lot about being around the squad."

In fact, Hughes has his eyes on reaching three figures for his country, a landmark only achieved by goalkeeper Pat Jennings.

"I guess because I am on 87 caps I do think a bit about getting to the 100 milestone," he said.

"Sometimes I let myself think about it, then there are other times when I know it is not the time to let my mind wander."

Hughes has been a Fulham player since 2007 when he joined from Aston Villa.
