Two teenagers that racially abused Newcastle United striker Sammy Ameobi have been handed final warnings by the police, according to the Crown Prosecution Service.

The 17-year-olds were arrested in November for racist comments that they made about Ameobi on Twitter.

Both pleaded guilty to the incident and have accepted the warnings from Northumbria Police.

"The CPS understands the serious nature of racist crime and the real and lasting effects it can have, not just on individuals and their families, but also upon communities and society as a whole," Wendy Williams, District Crown Prosecutor at CPS North East told reporters.

"Our policy is to prosecute racist and religious crime fairly, firmly and robustly. In deciding what constitutes 'fairness' for such cases, the views of the victim themselves are incredibly important."

Ameobi, 19, is currently on the sidelines with a knee injury.
