Alan Pardew says that Newcastle United's players understand their responsibility to the club as they approach the final five games of the season.

Newcastle United boss Alan Pardew has said that his team have been working hard in training following last Sunday's 3-0 defeat to Sunderland.

The Magpies still have work to do if they are to remain in the Premier League this season, with just five points separating them from the drop zone.

However, 18th-placed Wigan Athletic have played one game fewer than their relegation rivals.

Pardew said that his players are keen to make amends for the Tyne-Wear derby defeat when they pitch up at The Hawthorns later today.

"We've worked hard on the team this week," Pardew told reporters. "The players know they carry the responsibility of this club in the last five games of the season to get some good results.

"Steve Clarke has done a great job at West Brom in his first season as a manager, but we need to give a much better showing [than last weekend] and hopefully we will do that."

Newcastle have won the last two meetings between the two teams.
