Joe Hart would be happy to captain England but he does not believe that it matters who gets the role.

Interim manager Stuart Pearce elected to award the armband to Scott Parker for the Three Lions' 3-2 Wembley loss against Holland last month.

However, as the FA are not expected to announce Fabio Capello's successor until May, there is uncertainty over who will permanently lead out the national side.

The Manchester City keeper's relatively young age and his key role in the team make him one of the leading candidates, but the 24-year-old does not think that the title of captain is overly crucial.

"Of course, I would take it if it was given to me, but there are lot more people in pole position," said Hart.

"I think football is the kind of sport where it doesn't really matter who is in charge. You can be a captain without being one.

"You can do your thing whether or not you have a band on your arm."

Hart has been capped 17 times by England.
