Roy Hodgson: 'Nathaniel Clyne can't walk into England side'

England head coach Roy Hodgson says that Nathaniel Clyne cannot walk in and demand a place in the England starting XI.

Roy Hodgson has claimed that Nathaniel Clyne cannot "walk in" to the England side after the defender did not start against Slovenia on Sunday.

Phil Jones was selected to start at right-back for the Three Lions' 3-2 win in Ljubljana, with Jordan Henderson going on to fill the position after Jones went off with an injury.

The England head coach has defended his decision not to start Clyne, stating that he would have come under scrutiny had he not selected Jones.

The Daily Mail quotes Hodgson as saying: "We think Nathaniel Clyne is a very good player but I would be disappointed if I thought that on the basis of a good season with their clubs they can walk in and demand a place.

"If I was to play him and leave out Phil Jones there would have been a lot of questions about "don't you rate Phil Jones' and "don't you think he's a man of the future."

Hodgson also rubbished reports that Clyne stormed off after the match, which was won thanks to a late Wayne Rooney goal.
