Former Chelsea striker Didier Drogba finally agrees a free transfer to Chinese outfit Shanghai Shenhua on a two-year deal.

Former Chelsea striker Didier Drogba has agreed a free transfer to Chinese club Shanghai Shenhua, keeping him at the club until 2014.

The Ivory Coast international, who announced his departure from Stamford Bridge following the Blues' Champions League win at the end of the season, has constantly been linked with a switch to the Chinese Super League outfit.

A major shareholder within the club Zhu Jun confirmed yesterday that a deal was close to completion following a number of talks with the 34-year-old.

"I have considered all the offers I have received in the past few weeks, but feel that Shanghai Shenhua FC is the right move for me at this time," said Drogba. "I am looking forward to a new challenge, to experiencing a new culture, and excited about the new developments in the Chinese Super League.

"When Chelsea went to China last year, we had a great time and I met some amazing fans. I hope to help promote Chinese football around the world and further improve the links between China and Africa."

There were reports that negotiations had come to a halt following a minor dispute over wages, with the forward reportedly demanding up to £250,000 a week.

Drogba will be reunited with former Chelsea teammate Nicolas Anelka in July, who joined Shenhua in January.
