Rory Delap retires from football

Burton Albion confirm that Rory Delap has retired from football.

Rory Delap has retired from professional football at the age of 37, his last club Burton Albion have confirmed.

The former Derby County, Southampton and Stoke City midfielder, famed for his long throw, suffered a torn hamstring earlier this season and has struggled to overcome the injury.

Burton manager Gary Rowett told the club's official website: "Rory has been a constant professional since he joined the club in the summer.

"His attitude and work ethic have been a credit to himself and the invaluable knowledge and experience that he has passed onto the rest of the players here at Burton Albion has been priceless."

Delap, who also made 11 appearances at international level for the Republic of Ireland, signed for Burton in the summer and made seven appearances before suffering the hamstring injury in September.
